Automatic course pacing is visualized throughout the new Courseware Home Page. Educators will quickly see if students are ahead of pace, on pace, slightly off pace, or way behind pace through color-coded pacing bars and other visuals. This will allow educators to quickly identify individual students who may need immediate instructional support.
Pacing status reflects a simple mathematical equation. The system divides the number of activities within the course by the number of available learning days. Activities within a course includes tutorials, discussions, teacher graded activities, etc. Available learning days are the number of days between the start and end dates, minus the weekends and federal holidays.
Note: Customers must have an end date in the course section in order to see the pacing represented. Click here for details on managing end dates.
What you see in the color-coded icons is a visual representation of that equation and where a student lands:
|On pace: Number of activities completed are within 1 activity of the expected rate based on end date||Ahead of pace: 1 or more activities ahead based on the end date||Slightly off pace: 1 or 2 activities behind based on the end date||Way off pace: 3 or more activities behind based on the end date|
The lock icon and the clock icon represent the number of Locked items, and Items waiting on Teacher Scoring respectively. Clicking these icons will bring you to an appropriate page to act on those items. Courses without end-dates will only show this Lock and Clock icon as depicted above.
Access to pacing data means Educators have more information to help understand where students are and when they are struggling. It is possible, with the new completion and mastery rules, that a student could cruise through tutorials and mastery tests without concentrating or getting strong grades. This would be reflected in the Pacing status (the icon would show forward movement), in the Progress bar (showing students ahead of the pacing goal line), and in the Performance (by showing a poor current and course grade). This gives three data access points for the educator to step in and redirect the student appropriately. We have included an example of the Progress Bar and Performance below:
In the above example, the first student is behind pace and currently has an average grade of 78%. If they stopped working now, their final grade would be a 49%.
The second student is on pace for the due date and has a lower current grade (72%). Stopping now would result in a 69% final grade.
Both students are not meeting the expectation of +80% on their activities.
Additional features of the Pacing Views:
- Teachers creating or updating sections will need to define to define course start and end dates to receive a pacing percentage.
- Sections with no end date defined will not show pacing. Students and educators will see a progress bar with complete/total ratios.
- Teachers will be able to set individual start and end dates for students. This will be especially helpful for students who are added to a class at a later start date.
- Hiding or locking course activities will not impact pacing. Pace is determined by all activities in a course. Customers should customize the course if the desire is to remove activities that should not be counted toward pace or grade. Customized courses will be included in pacing.
- Students enrolled in the section will receive one of 4 pacing statuses based on the number of activities completed compared to the pacing goal for the course.
- Pacing introduces a new concept for completing activities in Edmentum curriculum. Completion of modules is not dependent on Mastery of the module. Once a Mastery Test has been attempted, it will be marked complete and the Score and Attempts recorded. Students will see movement along the pacing bar regardless if they have mastered modules.
- Completion of the Mastery Test counts as movement for pacing; pacing looks at completed activities that report a score. The Tutorial and Application will not count as a completed module.
- Grade Report customers will see modules mastered and completed rather than grades until they update to Gradebook.
Student Pacing View
Students will see pacing status on the Learner home page. Gradebook and previous Grade Tracker users will also see course and current grade information if allowed at the account level (Grade Report customers will not see grades until they opt-in starting December 22nd). This view provides students with more information on their course performance empowering them to be proactive decision makers when working in Courseware. Pacing data is only available within the 6-12 interface. K-2 and 3-5 learner interfaces will not have pacing visibility.
