Viewing progress, scores, and grades for Global Language courses using the Gradebook

Explanation

Learners complete assignments in a Global Language course within Middlebury Interactive Languages® (MIL). Progress data, scores, and grades are recorded and updated in MIL only. PLATO Learning Environment® (PLE) reports assignment level data only for Global Language courses. See the link below for more information on reports available in PLE:

How To

Viewing Learner progress, scores, and grades

  1. In MIL, click the Grades icon.
  2. The course Gradebook will display. A list of Learners enrolled in the course will display along with their current grade, last login, and scores for quizzes and other scorable assignments. To optimize performance in MIL, do not grade from the course Gradebook; use the individual Gradebook for each Learner instead.

  1. To view progress for an individual Learner, click the link for Current Grade next to the Learners name. NOTE:  If you do not see a link for the current grade located next to the learner's name, check the assignment as the learner may have progress recorded in a different assignment.
  2. The individual Learner Gradebook will display. This is the default view of an individual Gradebook.

  1. In the upper left hand corner is a Summary of Points, Grade to Date, and assignment details for the Learner.

Total Points: total points earned out of the total points available in the course. This includes any new assignments added to the course. Extra credit assignments do not count towards the Total Points in the course.

Grade to Date: total points earned out of the total possible points in the assigned lessons to date. The total number includes past due assignments not yet completed. It also includes ungraded assignments. Past due assignments do not lower a learners grade to date, however ungraded assignments lower the grade until an Instructor grades them. See the link below for more information on grading assignments marked ungraded:

How to grade speaking and writing assignments in Global Language courses

All Assignments: total number of assignments in the course. It includes extra credit assignments and the number will increase for new assignments created in the course.

Past Due Assignments: number of assignments marked past due. If the course calendar does not contain dates and months, assignments will not be marked past due. If the course calendar contains dates and months, then one lesson, consisting of multiple assignments is assigned and due each day. If Learners do not complete all assignments in the lesson for that day, they are marked past due. Learners can go back and complete past due assignments and they do not lower the grade. Click on the Past Due Assignments link to view the list of assignments marked past due.

Ungraded Assignments: oral or written assignments that need to be manually graded by an educator. They will lower a Learners score in the Gradebook until they are graded. Rubrics are available to assist in grading these assignments. Click on the Ungraded Assignments link to view the list of assignments marked ungraded.

Extra Credit Assignments: total number of assignments marked as extra credit in the course (if applicable). They are considered optional and do not lower the score in the Gradebook if they are not completed. Click on the Extra Credit Assignments link to view the list of assignments marked as extra credit.

Deleted Grades: scores an instructor has deleted for assignments a learner has taken multiple times (if applicable). Educators can unlock quizzes, other gradable activities or reset individual questions in an assignment so a learner can retake them. The system saves the last grade, not the best. Educators can then delete the lower grade. Click on the Deleted Grades link to view the list of deleted assignment grades. Deleted grades cannot be restored, nor is there any additional information that can be obtained from the deleted grades. See the link below for more information on unlocking and resetting quizzes:

You can easily view other Learner's Gradebook by selecting their name from the pull down list. You can also change the view for different assignment statuses (ex. past due, ungraded, etc.). Click Printer-Friendly Version to print the Gradebook.

A progress bar indicates a graphical picture of how far the Learner is progressing in the assignment. The numbers along the bar indicates the number of lessons. The blue shading along the bar indicates the progress in the lessons. Blank spaces in between the blue shading shows the Learner has skipped around in lessons and is not following the sequential order. The bar also shows the percentage completed.

A list of quizzes and other scorable activities are displayed. It details the Lesson, Assignment Name, Date Submitted (or past due), Score, Percentage, and if it was an extra credit assignment. The current day of activities due will be highlighted in yellow.

Click Show All Completed for a list of all other completed and incomplete assignments in the course. Completed Assignments detail the Lesson, Assignment Name, Date Completed, Score, Completion Status, and Assignment Status. If the Learner repeats an assignment multiple times, it will list each instance. Incomplete Assignments detail the Lesson, Assignment Name and Due Date. Click Back to Student Grades to return to the previous view.
