Do you need Microsoft Office installed to support new PLATO content?

Explanation

PLATO Learning is introducing new courses that include offline lessons that will utilize the following files types: .doc, .xls, and .ppt.  In order to use these lessons, your workstations will need software that will allow you to create and edit these file types.

Resolution

You may have seen a product announcement that suggested that you need to have Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) on your workstations, but you have multiple options.  Several software suites are available in Windows and Mac OS that support these file types, including but not necessarily limited to:

  • iWork® (Mac OS)
  • Microsoft Office® (Windows or Mac OS)
  • Open Office (Windows or Mac OS)

What's Next

If you are not sure whether a workstation meets the mininum requirements to run PLATO Courses, use the System Requirements Checker, which will test for required browser plug-ins as well as other requirements, including the ability to access the required file types.  For more information about the System Requirements Checker, refer to this article.
